New York Deli

deli salad.jpg

On a recent lunch outing, I enlightened a friend who was not from Cardiff to the quirky places down high street arcade. Having heard such great things about New York Deli, we thought why not go in and have a nose. They have even won awards in previous years for best sandwich bar by the south wales echo. Unfortunately I had given up bread for lent so this was a risky move, stepping into a shop that sold mostly bread products. When I stepped in I informed the server that I could not bread and she gratefully told me my options. I settled on a salad, but was also offered soup, though I would of had to have left the bread on the side and would have been a bit of a waste.

In my salad were firstly the general basics of, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, spinach and spring onion. Then the magic happened, I had so much choice, from meats, cheese and sauces. I choose to have pastrami, brie and cranberry sauce. Though there was a vast array of other options including, Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese, ham, tuna and gherkins. The salad cost around £4.00 which I believed was pretty reasonably priced. Once I had sat down and the salad for bought over, it was a mound of delightful food. I didn’t know where to start eating, there was tons and tons of pastrami, which when I mixed it with the cranberry sauce was just a taste explosion in my mouth. New York Deli is one of the places that will stay in my mind due to them being one of the rare places that sells Snapple!! I just love mango Snapple and was delighted when I saw it in their fridge, although they do have an array of other beverages in and out of the fridge.

My friend unlike me had not given up bread, so was lucky to be able to choose loads of the menu. He finally settled on an American style hot dog with ketchup and mustard. This cost around £3.20; it was loaded up with tons of gherkins. When his food came I was extremely jealous of the deliciously looking bread and sausage mound (picture below). Having seen the amazement of bread, meat, cheese and sauciness I will have to return after Easter.

When we stepped in we were the first ones to the counter, but five minutes later the crowds came for the lunch time rush. When visiting take the time into account as if you plan on sitting in your may be disappointed and not be able to have a seat. There is great seating area upstairs on a mini balcony looking down on the sandwich shop. The tables have very vintage legs and are a striking shade of red, with Victorian type designs. If it’s a nice sunny day there is even a bench outside to eat your food and watch the world go by. On the wall to set the scene there is a graffiti mural of a New York underground train, which I think is an awesome piece of art work. Overall the food was pretty awesome; the only downside is to make sure you have cash on you as they do not take card. I will be sure to be returning in the near future just so I can have my intake of bread goodness.
