Last week I decided to head down to Cardiff bay for the first time since my operation. My friend accompanied me, with the plan for us to head to zizzis restaurant. When we had just left the car had a bit to walk, but had so much to take in. Firstly passing the fountains, craft in the bay, the heading in the direction to Roald dhal plaza. As we crossed the road there standing in all its glory was the millennium center(picture in the gallery). Next to it is a long mirrored pillar with water running down it, great for a mini water fight with friends in the summer. Seeing as it was pretty cold still, I thought it was best to do the tourist thing and have a photo in front of the pillar. As we carried on walking there was the vast scenery and all the things that I know I have to come back and explore.
Just to the right is where there are a huge selection of restaurants and cafes to choose from, we had decided long ago to go to Zizzis. The restaurant was just up the stairs and there you could see the panoramic view of the open water and the barrage in the distance. When we entered we were welcomed and asked where we would like to sit. It was a shame that the entire lot of window seats had already been taken but we found a place where you could still see out.
The fact I had chosen Italian food and had given up bread automatically meant that I could exclude the pizza choices of the menu. The pizza options did sound amazing , the pulled pork pizza sounded so mouthwatering so I’ll have to return to try it of course. My friend settled on a choice very quickly being a regular to Zizzis choosing the spaghetti pomodoro and a side of garlic bread with cheese. When the food came out the garlic bread looked amazing, oozing with mozzarella and lathered with caramelized onions, I was truly jealous of this bread extravaganza. The pasta had the best kind of cheese on it, buffalo mozzarella and was lightly scattered with baby plum tomatoes. She thoroughly enjoyed her food and the waitress gave her lashing of parmesan for extra added flavor.
Once I had looked over most of the menu, being very indecisive I excluded most of the main and thought about getting one or two starters. Then I spotted it the beautiful dish that brought me back to my childhood and my Sicilian grandmas cooking. The beautiful dish was arancini which I wish I knew how to make myself and will eventually get my grandma to teach me. These consist of balls of risotto with mozzarella and tomato mixed in, the coating was made out of peas and bread crumbs. This is where after eating them that I realized I was slightly cheating having bread crumbs, technically bread but I questioned that I could of broken my lent. Putting aside my failure I also had the Sicilian antipasti which had an array of delicious foods. It was made up of, roasted peppers, sun blushed tomatoes, aubergines, artichokes and buffalo mozzarella. There was also a side of olives, but I was not too keen on the look of them so left them to the side. Both dishes were very filling so did not have room for any dessert.
When it came to paying we were lucky we were not in any rush as many others seemed to be due to performance of dirty dancing starting. What we could gather was that there was an issue with the till system and many people were not happy. We waited a while as our waitress seemed a bit busy with the customers that were desperate to pay and leave. Once we saw that the madness had calmed down we made our own way to the tills to pay our bill. For the two of us the meal came to just under £30 but as we had a voucher the bill was a lot less and great value for money. The amount of time my friend has been she was even recognized by the manager as a regular. I will be sure to return to try one of their many pizzas or other bread like products.
