Situated just off Albany road is a hidden gem of an art experience M.A.D.E Cardiff. Many may previously have know it as milkwood art gallery situated in lochober street. I had heard about the gallery through social media and seeing as I had the day off thought id pop down there even if it was on my own. The exhibition that was on show at the time of my visit(end of march) was called concentric. This collection of art pieces all had its own artists theme but all the artist shared the common ground that they were women.
When I entered the gallery I was welcomed in by the staff and told if i needed information about the art that it was situated on the side. The first thing that caught my eye was a giant knitted blanket held to the wall by enormous knitting needles. This was the work of Lydia spurrier -Dawes, this must have taken hours to produce and hung dominantly. As I moved along there were sketches by Penny Hallas, one showed a dog protruding from a shoe. The detailing in the sketch made the dog look so life like, but I did not get the artistic intent where the rest of the dogs body was.
The other artist that featured in this exhibit included Leona jones , Kay Keogh and Sheila Vyas all artists from cardiff. Out of all the peicies on display it had to be the collection by Lydia Spurrier-Daws that I enjoyed the most. Her depiction of football anthems with a twist was awe inspiring. The cross stitching of the word and the imagery that went along with it was captivating. The power of the football anthems and the imagry sure brought the idea of a sense of community and collectivity.
Although I only visited for a short while I would be sure to return in the future. Whether it be to sit and relax in there eclectic little cafe area or try one of their many craft events. It is sure advantage being down the road from me and a place where I can get my creative side flowing.
