Over the Easter bank holiday I finally got to Roath Park, one of the top things to do on my bucket list. I arrived pretty early around 11 to the park and it was already heaving with families, everyone had the same idea sunshine and a walk around the park. I meet up with a friend whose birthday had just gone for a walk and a catch up. When we first arrived at the main gates we headed towards the raised seating area, there we could munch on the cake I had bought for her birthday. From up here you could take in the scenery around you and was also a great spot to people watch, something I had missed when house bound.
Once we had finished nibbling on our cakes we felt best to at least try and burn off some of the calories, so headed down and started our walk. The park was packed and you generally had to pay attention to where you were going. Groups of families, with kids on bikes or people feeding the ducks truly everyone wanted to enjoy the park. As we got walking there was several times I had to avoid a few geese not wanting a repeat of my childhood where one bit me. We soon came to the top part of the lake near what I like to call Duck Island. There in the water were huge fish now visible after the clearing of the once algae infested water.
As we carried on around to the top half of the path as I looked out into the water, to my delight on the bank was a tortoise. There it was camouflaged in between a tree trunk and shrubs, bit confused of how it got there though. As we continued our walk all kinds of wildlife were visible from geese, to swans and many other variety of birds. One being a beautiful black and white bird making his own little nest, if I looked I’m sure there would have been information on him. Then there is the distance was the lighthouse standing there in all its glory the centre piece of the park.
We eventually ended up walking along the promenade that separates the playground from the lake. The amount of things that had changed in the playground since I was little was vast, from mini golf to a log swing. Along the promenade were tons of beautiful flowers bringing the park to life. Although it was only a short visit the fact that I could now walk around the park rather than sit on a bench was a much anticipated trip finally fulfilled. I will be sure to return in the near future to tick a few more things off my list. There still being the greenhouse to visit and for me to hire a boat on the lake.
