When hearing about this place from a colleague at work and seeing the pictures I knew I had to visit. Although I live in Cardiff and it was in Hereford it was one we were willing to make. Going on a weekday had its bonuses that the pub was quiet and you didn't feel rushed. We had booked 2 weeks in advance and I would advise anyone visiting to do so.
So some may call it an afternoon tea, but within the pub, its called a picnic bench. We had just caught the end of the spring season with the summer one only starting in a weeks time. You could go several times throughout the year and have a surprise each time as the food is seasonal.
The pub its self has many a sign, with an example of the welcome sign above. Canvases scattered the walls with quirky messages such as "diet, fork that". When entering the staff are very welcoming and double check to make sure you have no dietary requirements. With the picnic bench no full-sized drinks as such come with it, so I suggest to order one on the side.
When the bench came out for the 3 of us it was huge. So much food although all miniature. The savoury side consisted of waffle fries, macaroni cheese, a chicken burger and a mozzarella dipper. On the sweet side, there was a mini lemon drizzle cake, a cake pop, rocky road bite and a raspberry and passion fruit compote. Moving on to the tall dishes, you get two drinks one raspberry and the other a kind of mint lemonade. Then tall desserts are one of tricoloured jelly and a mint layered moose with a biscuit filling. The dishes are just the right amount to fill you but not leave you feeling sick. The cost for each person portion on the bench is £16.50, which is a bargain for what you get.
Although the food is mini the pot of tea we had to finish it all off was not. The cups and the tea both huge and the tea its self very refreshing. I will most definitely be returning in the near future to try a different seasonal selection.
