Situated just down the road from the bath, Bristol and Glastonbury is the small city of Wells. Wells is named the smallest city in England just situated in Somerset. Girls weekend away needed some site seeing, culture and all within walking distance. We soon found Wells the perfect place and here is why.
When doing some research I found out that although there were only a few sights to see they all would have amazing architecture. One was called vicar's close, a run of houses with a cobbled street. Most houses still had their traditional fixtures, with traditional doors and windows. What was very noticeable though was the bow in the roofs. At the end of the street is a small chapel open for all to write a prayer or just reflect.
Before going I had done certain research, soon finding out that Wells was the filming place of the Simon Pegg film hot fuzz. If you're feeling up to a weekday visit there are organised movie tours for those superfans. These are held on Wednesday at 11 am, for more information look on TripAdvisor.
Other information, on the other hand, I had not looked up. When walking back from a meal in the evening a plaque caught our eyes. A world record holder Mary Bignal Rand was a resident of Wells, holding the long jump record. The record was made in the 1964 Olympics, with the distance displayed along plaques. The distance was given a go by a few of us and it was a massive jump to achieve.
The town has a quirky market when we first arrived on the Saturday selling all sorts. From homemade chutney, books, crafts and much more. The shops still have the traditional fronts and have many great independents stores. Do take into account on a Sunday many of these are closed.
The biggest feature that brings in tonnes of people to Wells is the cathedral. It can be seen around for miles with its great gothic architecture. Another star of the city is the bishops palace, beautiful gardens and grounds. Both these places are that great that I've had to do separate articles for them(coming soon).
Other sights are the wells and Mendip Museum, close by Glastonbury Tor and another article coming soon will be the Mendip hospital cemetery. I would recommend this beautiful city to many for a short weekend away.
