Having already booked a spa day at the hotel, I thought why not eat here between treatments as well. I had gone to the bar to book with a gentleman a week before. When booking the guys computer was not working so he wrote it down on a bit of paper instead. When we arrived at the bar and our names were not on the list I was a bit worried. The lady then went to the kitchen, came back and we were then seated.
We were sat right by the window, so could watch the world go by while we ate. When we were sat we were asked what we would like to drink and we both opted for English breakfast tea. The pot that was brought over was huge and had a total of 4 tea bags in it. If you don't like strong tea ill advise you to take them out asap.
Shortly afterwards we were brought over the cakes and sandwiches. It was a three-tier stand with one layer of sandwiches and two of cakes.
Firstly we had to decipher the sandwich fillings. The bread where a mixture of white, multi-seed and one was even a ciabatta. The filling consisted of coronation chicken, smoked salmon, egg with cress and ham with mustard.
We then moved onto the cakes and it was lucky we had no allergies as it was mystery cake plate. We could figure out, the mini chocolate eclair, the coffee and walnut cake, as well as the scone. The other cake until I cut into the middle I couldn't tell it was a Victoria sponge. The square cake was what I'd describe as a french fancy. The cake had somewhat of an odd aftertaste I couldn't quite put my finger on.
The final cake we had was a scone each, with lashings of cream and jam. Both come with currents in them, so if you would want a plain one ask in advance. Once we had finished our food, the waitress got us another huge pot of tea which was great. The cost for the 2 of us was £29.90, so the extra tea was free. I have to say it's not the best afternoon tea I've had, but when you're hungry it fills the spot. I feel if you want the basic this is the place. Otherwise, there is nothing that makes them stand out from the crowd.
