Chepstow castle -Chepstow

After having trekked around one castle it was on to the next one. Two castles in one day easy peasy. Chepstow only being down the road from Raglan it was not long before we arrived. Below the castle, there is parking which charges or free for disabled badge holders. On this day the car park was jam-packed but normally parking is much easier.

As soon as you walk up the castle it towers over you as you stroll on up the pathway. The path is not flat so take your time if you're unsteady on your feet. To enter you have to go through the gift shop, but for disabled access do ask. They then open the decorative glad gates for you to enter. The cost normally is £6.50 for an adult but open doors meant it was free.

The castle dates back as far as 1070 when the first foundations were built. Through time though many alterations were made to the castle, either for aesthetics or for defence reasons. People such as William the conquer and also the Tudors having such influence on the changes.

In many parts stands some of the original wooden doors although not in working order. Unfortunately when I visited one of the most spectacular rooms was closed. This room is the earl's chamber but is currently under repair.

There is also an opportunity to walk up to each level of the tower and look across Chepstow. Though do stop at each level as there is something to see as you climb up.

Pictures above is the grand hall, or what at least remains of it. The beautiful arch of the windows can only give you a glimpse of the spectacle that once stood. Do take your time when exploring as this castle has many a nooks and crannies. From cellars to hidden windows looking out, there are tons of things to see.

On sight, there were also tours at 11, 1 and 3. These were run by what I could describe as someone dressed as an archer. Unfortunately, Raglan castle had taken most of the day so didn't have time to attend. So if in the area I would highly recommend a visit and keep an eye out for events they hold throughout the year.
