BBQ extravagance at- The Smokehouse Pontcanna

I had heard many great things about this place, from pictures to reviews and recommendations. Firstly booking was a bit harder than normal, the usual phone call didn't seem to work. Either they were to busy to answers or we rang on a day they were closed. But thankfully due to the wonders of social media, we managed to book. By contacting them through their Facebook page in a private message, I then received a reply a day or two later. This meant at least if I forgot what time I booked for could always reference back.

Travelling there was easy, situated just at the end of Cathedral road its pretty central. We jumped on the bus which runs roughly every 10 minutes, with several routes going that way. Alternatively, you could drive, walk or even cycle as there are plenty of bike racks nearby.

When we did arrive we had left plenty of time to get there. In fact, we were 20 minutes early. But although we were early there was a table for us so there was no standing around. The restaurant its self is pretty small and does not really have a bar as such. With the space there I'd say seating would be a maximum of 30. The walls are decorated with frames of different animals which I loved.  The furniture itself was somewhat miss match, but all very sturdy wood.

We were seated towards the back of the room, which meant no cold autumn breeze. Each table also had a candle on it creating an ambience. So when we did arrive my boyfriend did have a certain problem. This was that his thighs didn't fit under the table. With there being a large party leaving, we spotted a better-suited table. When asked if we could swap tables it was no problem at all to move us. This meant we could sit and eat our food in perfect comfort.

So let's get on to the food and drink its self. Normally when I'm going somewhere I've looked up the menu beforehand. This time it must have passed my mind and meant I had to be more decisive when choosing. It covers a huge range of meats, grills, burgers and also has veggie options. Also with their specials on the board as well as puddings. One other board is a selection of craft beers and ales. With their origins and alcohol percentage displayed. One thing that was not on the drinks menu is cider, not one and this is my usual beverage of choice. So we just settled for a coke each and water on the table.

So onto the food, whenever we go out we always order too much and struggle to finish it. So we settled on having mains and a side, so no starters for us this time. I currently have an issue with my wisdom tooth so wanted meat that would just fall apart. I opted for the chicken and rib combo(£14.95), with a side of mac and cheese(£3.0). My boyfriend had the holy trinity(£22.50)which is a whole load of meat!!

So my food firstly where do I start. For £1 extra I upgraded my skin on fires to sweet potato and they didn't disappoint. The food arrived on a wood block full to the brim. The ribs and chicken were atop an assortment of mixed leaves. This is not listed on the menu but was a greater added extra. The selection of leaves and the salad dressing were a great combination with the meat. The chicken flaked away easily and meant I could blend the salad and chicken together. The honey glaze was just enough that it didn't overpower. The ribs were so succulent with the meat falling off the bone causing no issues for my tooth issue. Coleslaw is generally a no go for me though so I had a nibble but gave it to my boyfriend.

My side though, I literally do not know how to describe how amazing it was. Mac and cheese always has the risk of being overpowering and this certainly was not. The bed of cheese on top once cooled was beautiful and stringy and mixed with the meat was just mouthwatering. I would highly recommend if you try just one thing this be your dish.

Finally, my boyfriend's dish has a huge assortment of meat so you can sample everything. It starts with ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket and some buffalo wings. This is just the meat as you also get onion rings and a side of barbecue beans. The beef brisket was beautifully cooked and in no way dry. The buffalo wing was crispy and the chicken tender, but seemed to be lacking actual buffalo sauce. I hear that the barbeque beans were amazing especially mixed with the mac and cheese. I also had a nibble of the pulled pork and its very melt in your mouth.

The food here certainly didn't disappoint and we will have to return. The portions are standard but then good if you don't want to overindulge. The staff are also friendly with the prices reasonable. Now all I have yo decide is what I'm eating next.
