Situated just down the road from Llandaff train station is Salkaara. An area of Cardiff I don't often visit but has some surprising hidden food eateries. With it being a friends birthday and she'd had a take away from here before, she highly recommended a visit.
We had booked for 7 pm just in case it was busy, but when we arrived only one other person was there. With it being a Tuesday night towards the end of the month it made sense why it may have been quiet. We were warmly seen to our seats and given the menu while we waited for the rest of the table to arrive.
We started with some drinks, having given up fizzy drinks for lent I opted for a mango juice. It did cost me a fair bit at £3.00 for half a pint glass. For the table we got some popadoms and dips to share for starters(£7.00 for 2 bowls). The standard dips like mango chutney were there but a pleasantly surprising one of beetroot too. The waiter was great at explaining what each dip was before leaving us to feast.
For mains, we all generally opted for a curry dish, rice and nan bread. I had already looked up the menu before visiting so knew kind of what I was having. I opted for the lamb shank nalli korma(£13.50). The meat just fell off the bone and the sauce was beautifully creamy with rich in flavours. I opted for the plain naan and some mushroom rice but there were tons of options. One that is never seen before was fig and coriander naan, but I was not brave enough it try it.
Other dishes that were tried were chicken tikka, pakoras and some vegetarian dishes. The waiter warned my one friend that the dish she was ordering was very hot, but offered yoghurt with it just in case. The pakoras were beautifully presented and I hear they were delicious too. The menu has a huge array of options to suit everyone taste and the portions are reasonably sized.
When we had finished our food the table was cleared promptly and we were given the dessert menu. Unfortunately, I was stuffed so just opted for a cuppa tea. The waiter had also asked if it was for a special occasion as he'd seen the cards and presents. Before you knew it he came out with a little cake and candle so we could sing happy birthday. This was a very nice touch to the meal, going to extra mile. Paying was easy enough with the snazziest card machine I'd seen in a long time. It soon came time to leave but I made sure before leaving I grabbed a take away menu for future food feasts.
