First things first, the photo won't go the way I want it so please do ignore it.
My friend for her birthday wanted to go dip her toes in the sea .Ogmore seemed like the best spot to go where it would not be too busy. I knew then it was the opportunity to go and visit Cobbles kitchen as I had heard such great things. I later realised that in mine and my friends 25 year friendship we had never been to an afternoon tea together . The chance to tick it off the list was now there.
Afternoon tea on a weekend is served 12-4pm costing £20 per head . So booking is essential and they do request a £10 deposit per head. This I can understand due to many no shows and business not wanting food waste. Cobbles is situated just up the road from the beach about a 5 minute drive and clearly signed. Parking is free , with an overflow carpark available. The building is situated in an old barn and unfortunately there did not seem to be obvious disabled access, but I may stand corrected.
We were warmly welcomed and shown to our seats. Lucky it was 2 of us as the bench seats seem to not be very sturdy, I would recommend mentioning this on your booking. We had to comfy chair with backs thankfully. The room is beautifully decorated with the original beams showing and some seasonal floral decor. Our China was laid out already , and was beautifully mis matched.
We were offered drinks when being seated , if tea is not your thing there are options of soft drinks as well. I was very happy that they had decaf tea as well, with refills of tea being included.
It was time to now eat and our stand was brought over very promptly. It consisted of 3 tiers, 1 with sandwiches 2 with cakes. Then on the side was a slate board with a scone each. The stand was beautifully decorated with pea shoots, edible flowers and fruit.
We started with the savoury, a selection of 4 different sandwiches each. Egg mayo, cheese with pickle, cream cheese with cucumber and ham salad. There is vegetarian and vegan options as well so do just ask. The best one was the cheese and pickle, just the right strength of cheddar that it was not too over powering.
It was now time to move on to the sweet treats and we were not disappointed. As seen in the picture i started with the cake on the top with the mini jammy dodger. When I bit into it I instantly knew it was a delicious Victoria sponge cake. I also dabbled in some of the chocolate covered strawberries which were so fresh. The top tier had a beautiful chocolate carmel tart , the carmel just the right amount of sweetness. Be careful though on the top is a little gold candy that might give your teeth a shock if your not prepared for the crunch.
The middle tier consisted of a carrot cake which I did not eat as its not a cake I am a fan of. So we did a swap and I had two of the mini lemon meringue tarts. The tarts were delicious, a lovely lemon curd.
We left the best to last tucking in to the scones. These were huge plain scones and when cutting into them still warm and crumbly. The jam that came with it was strawberry, but I'm sure if you ask they might have other flavours. The scone was one of the best I have had in a long time, so fresh and tasty.
I would highly recommend visiting cobbles kitchen even if I have only dabbled in their afternoon tea culinary delights. At present the kitchen is not open , but I am sure I saw a sign saying it will be soon so keep an eye out.
