Cardiff Market

Situated in the city centre of Cardiff is a market with much to explore. Plants, jewellery, fabrics and food galore! Standing since 1891 and a grade 2 listed building a lot of the original victorian features still standing.

On a recent visit some friends were visiting for the weekend and I thought it the perfect opportunity to take them there for both a look around and for lunch. With so many options for food each time is a new culinary experience. As you walk in once you get past the fishmonger you can start to smell some of the tasty delights.

There is one essential visit you must make and that is to cardiff bakestones! The best Welsh cakes by miles in cardiff. With many an option to choose from, traditional, plain, filled and diabetic , there is one to satisfy everyone's taste. My favourite at the moment is the biscoff one. If welshcakes are not your thing there is another great Welsh option of bara brith. A huge slab costing £4 , take it home warm it and slather the butter on ,you won't regret it. But as you can see above there is a range of treats to have, if they are as good as the Welsh cake you will not be disappointed.

The majority of eateries are situated up stairs with seating looking down at the other shops. If it's Japanese, Thai, polish dumplings, Indian fried chicken or pizza your options are endless. Having tired the pierogi and then tukka tuk chicken on previous visited it was time to branch out.

I opted for a pizza this time from Ffwrnes as I had heard great things. As I approached it was very busy with a queue of egar customers. The menu had about 8 options with a vegan special at the time of visit. After much deliberation I narrowed it down to a mushroom pizza, the fungi. The pizza came to around £9.50 with a can on raspberry lemonade as well.

After placing the order there was about a 10 minute wait, so I stood patiently waiting for my number to be called. The option to sit in or takeaway was there, seeing as it was a nice day I thought let's take it away.

The pizza when it arrived was piping hot and cut into 4 so no need for cutlery. We found a nice spot to sit just outside the market in the gardens adjacent. It was time to bite into the pizza, as I picked up a slice I was impressed by the mushrooms staying on the slice. Many mushroom pizzas can be soggy, but the cheese to mushroom raito held strong. The dough was beautifully cooked and the tomatoes not too sweet. I will be sure to return again to try another flavour.

This was just my cuisine of choice, friends sampled food from many other vendors. From toyko nights , pierogi and tukka tuk with smiles all round. So if you find yourself in the city centre and need a spot of food the market it the place to go.
