Having visited the farm before for Halloween I had high expectations for the sunflower maize maze. Clearwell farm is located just past St Mellons and easy to get to through a few lanes. I would recommend for peak days booking is essential as it can get busy. We booked an evening slot about a week in advance. The website was pretty easy to navigate the time and date slots. The only thing I could not figure out if it was adults going on your own. Luckily we were 4 adults and 3 kids so got two family tickets. This worked out costing roughly about £45.00 in total. So per person about £6.00.
When we arrived it was very quiet and there were only about 5 cars parked up. We were warmly welcomed by a guy and our tickets checked. For the kids they had created an animal treasure hunt. Hidden within the maze are the lost farm animals and you have to find them. There was a checklist with the animals to find, just make sure you bring a pen to tick them off.
We thought it best to get a drink before heading in the maze, with a lot on offer. From cans to water, to ice cream. They take card or cash as well. We found a seat for a few moments to have a drink and get away from the heat. There is plenty of seating in the shade and out in the open to pick from.
It was then time to head to the starting point of the maze. As we made our way there were several signs with some whitty jokes on. Pictures of corn painted and some decorative scare crows.
The estimated time give for the maze was 30 - 40 minutes to complete. When you first walk in its mostly maize with it actually being pretty tall so you can't really look over. We got walking for a while letting the children lead. It was a good 10 minutes before we found our first animal. We were off to a good start at least, but then we got a bit lost. It's hard to tell on some parts and you end up in circles for a bit sometimes.
We then got a bit too hot so aimed for the end of the maze. We missed finding one of the scarecrows in the end, but we're able to find all the animals other wise. When we went it was quiet in the maze so it meant no bumping into people. It also meant you could not follow others and cheat your way out.
Once we had taken our finish line snaps it was time to get an ice cream and have a sit down. There are some hay bails to sit on or if your a kid climb on. This meant we had time to eat our ice cream ready for the sunset.
We dabbled in a few of the games such as wellie wanging With there also being a can knock down. We went on a day with no events but there is still plenty to do. I would highly recommend a visit sooner rather than later before the plants die off. So take plenty of liquids and sun screen and you could make a day of it.
