Clued upp -Alice in wonderland

Having taken part in a Clued Upp adventure before I had my experience and expectations for this one. A company who have designed a digital treasure hunt to solve around your local city. Having previously done the ripper hunt,I knew the basics on the app that is used for their adventures. So it is all application based and using GPS helps to know when to give you clues.

This one was an Alice themed treasure hunt to find Alice. For months bombarded on my social media trying to get me to join. It was only when I was given a discount code that I actually bought the ticket. Up to 6 adults can play with children being free. Original costing £60 but with the discount I paid £27 which I was pleased I had waited for. The amount of times it would try to pressure me into getting a ticket with the suggestion there being 4 places left was madness. As it was defiantly a lie and marketing ploy.

You are given your location about a week before it starts. The location is always the same place for Cardiff outside the museum. Before we even got there were could see lots of people dressed in wonderland attire. When we hit the ground we were shocked at how many people they had sold tickets too. We could start anywhere from 9am to 5pm. The suggested time is 2 and 1/2 hrs to play. We got there at 2pm and there were so many people still taking part. The problem with there being so many people is that you are trying to figure out a clue and you often over hear. With the GPS working in a small section it did often get a bit over crowded.

So on to the game its self, all of it is based on a clue activating when you hit a certain location. The walking is a lot for someone who is not so mobile, you will definitely get your 10k stes in for the day. At one point we had to visit one character and then double back on ourselves which my boyfriend was not too impressed with. Lucky there had been some communication and the roads around the area closed off due to the volume of people there.

So the clues you get there is some head work to do on some, but others that are basic. This time I was very impressed by the variety of options to get to the next stage. Things such as shaking your phone, blowing into your phone and also sliding puzzles. The majority with riddle clues, but some were questions that could only be answered once you had another clue. One section we approached a cross road ,my boyfriend pointed out that it was going to be a hard clue. The fact that so many people had stopped and were struggling. The question was worded very badly and everyone was overthinking it. We eventually figured it out but it did impact our time a lot.

The quicker you do it the better as there is a leaderboard of the top 50. But rushing can be costly. Certain clues give you limited chances to answer. There is also time penalties for getting it wrong. Luckily the application you can pause it , but you must activate it in the same spot. One clue had a timmer to get to a certain spot. The only thing was you had to cross a busy road with traffic lights. Things like this should be avoided as it was an accident waiting to happen.

Overall it was pretty enjoyable experience , but my feet were very sore by the end. Thankfully I had my boyfriend there as some of the clues I would never have gotten. I would sugges taking a team with different skills to get your time up in the top 50. We completed ours in 1hr 48 minutes which left us just short of the top 50. The fastest time was 51 minutes which made me think they must have been running to the location spots. I look forward to see which theme will be next from Clued Upp.
