Happy Gathering

For about a year I had been craving dim sum, after researching Happy Gathering in canton it seemed like the best option. I phoned and booked about a week in advance as I heard it got busy. We visited on a Sunday lunch time around 1pm. The decor is very traditional, just a sea of red and you can see that it has been there a long time.

When we walked in it is all upstairs, I did not see any obvious disabled access unfortunately. My in laws had already gotten there and been given the menus. It has to be said that the menus are very overwhelming. There is then a separate one for sim sum , as well as some set menus.

We first got our drinks and then had to narrow down the menu. My parents and In laws opted for the set menu. £23 per head for a lot of food. Everyone wanted to try some dim sum as well so we added this to the order.

Me and my boyfriend opted for 2 dishes and a side of rice, as well as some dim sum. The majority of the dim sum came out first as there was only so much room on the table to fit everything.

We first were given the baked roast pork buns(£4.50 for 6), these were a lot bigger than previous one I had tried. I really enjoyed them but my boyfriend said they be better without the sweet glaze on top. We also opted for prawn dumplings(£4.50), these came out pipping hot.

The set menu had a range of things on offer and I tried a few of them as there was just so much food. For starters you got prawn crackers, ribs and finger spring rolls. The ribs were glazed in very rich bbq sauce. The spring rolls were also a dish that was very hot , steam pouring out as you bit into them.

For the mains on the set menu there were 5 dishes in total. The sweet and sour chicken was very sweet but had a good ratio of meat to vegetables. The other dishes I did not have a chance to eat. It consisted of stir fired bean sprouts, egg fried rice , sliced pork in black bean sauce and sliced beef in garlic and chilli sauce.

Me and my boyfriend opted for 2 dishes and a side of egg fried rice. The first one was a noddle dish , crispy noodles with shredded pork. I enjoyed it but my boyfriend on the other hand not so much. There was so much left over mind we had to take a lot of it home.

Next time we go I think I will research the menu a bit more beforehand. The portions are big so you only need one or 2 dishes, otherwise you will be taking it home.
