This is an activity I have wanted to do for years. The thrill of holding those axes and getting all your aggression out, or skillfully hitting a target, it really appealed to me. It now becoming a past time that is more common and it being the new group event activity .
It being birthday week no time like the present I thought . I had seen adverts for it and saved a local company as a reference a while back. Located in an industrial estate in Cardiff just off Newport Road is Lumber Jack's. Easy to get to with on site parking or accessible by bus and a short walk.
Booking is essential to avoid not getting a place. I booked roughly about a week in advance and paid upfront. There are several times slots starting from 4pm. Costing £20 per person for 90 minutes this is great value for money compared to other vendors offering the same activity.
When we arrived we were welcomed and the first ones there. We were then to sign a wavier so that the company is covered for certain things. So attire I would strongly advise thinking about your footwear. Something that is closed toe and easy to move in. Trainers here are your best bet. Clothes wise less is best, I wore a quilted dress and leggings and by the end was sweating buckets.
We were shown to our area which consisted of two targets, a slightly boxed in area with some wood shavings scattered about. We were shown the basic hold and throw to get us going. You are given the safety instructions as well, so do follow them as they are there for a reason. As the instructor rightly stated it will take most people a good 10 to 15 minutes to get it. I was the first to get an axe in the board, followed 5 minutes later by my boyfriend.
Once we had gotten the hang of it we were then shown some upgraded skills. First was the two axes at the same time, next the underarm, finally the two handed over head power throw. These all took a while to master, the hardest being the under arm throw.
Once we had practiced these it was time to improve our form. Targets is what we went for. In the top picture there are two little green dots. There is a leader board, how many in that 90 minute time frame can you hit. Surprisingly I was pretty rubbish at this only hitting it 5 times. My boyfriend on the other hand managed a total of 16. This landed himself on the leader board.
Generally the experience was amazing ,enjoyed by both of us. The music playing was amazing and I should of asked for the sound track. Pop punk, emo and rock songs, my kind of music . The activity does make you work up a sweat and uses a lot of muscles. The next day I woke up with a very sore shoulder. This is properly due to me not having used that muscle in a long time. The staff are friendly and it's such good value for money. I will definitely be returning and reccomend you visit as well.
