Having a new place in cardiff to play mini golf sounded like a great thing. So we booked in advance for a weekday to go and check it out. Located on St Marys street in the former liquid building, with its fancy make over.
I booked about a week in advance and visited on a Wednesday. We got the off peak slot between 5-6pm which meant per person costing £15 for 18 holes. We also thought it would mean not many people would be there so could take our time.
When we arrived the doorman is the friendliest guy ever. First impressions count so putting him there is great welcome. You then go down a lot of stairs so be prepared. You then will hit the booth where they will ask you name and hand over the score cards. They briefly explain where to go next to get your clubs once entering the room.
As we entered the room it was clear we were the first ones there. We kind of stood around for a bit as there was only a person at the bar. Eventually someone appeared to give us the low down.
We were given a club each, but your only allowed one ball. We asked when we did the second course why, it's due to people stealing the golf balls. We were then given our instructions and shown on our way. If you do want a drink there is a table with a scanner on each golf hole. These are then brought to you.
Having previously been when it was liquid, you could tell that all 18 holes had been rammed into what was once the dance floor. The same circle just painted black now. The whole place was black, but with lots of neon lights.
When first stepping on to the course do watch as there is a lip to each course to step up on to. Personally I felt these were more of an annoynce as you could not hit the ball at times from certain angles. Each course was very short with most being just a 2 metre stretch. I'd say we completed the first 9 holes within 15 minutes. This was a mixture of the place getting busy with a queue behind us and the course being small.
It was then time to move on to the second course. We had to wait a while for ourselfs to even get a ball as no staff seemed to be around. Eventually a gentleman appeared and we were on our way. Again with this we went through it pretty quickly. A few of these I did get a hole in one, but others were impossible. The one you had to hit the ball up and then it just landed at a number. We had to get someone to come and explain where the ball landed to continue our games..
Overall its a very compact place to play mini golf. At peak times it would be very stressful experience to play, with a queue forming behind you. We were there for a total of 45 minutes playing the games and deciding if we should stick around. I think the hype was there but I have had better mini golf experiences.
