The long wait was final over, Roath street food circus was back!! One of the reason I purchased the house I did is because of its closeness to Roath Street food circus. Roll out of bed and get me some food just on my door step.
Situated on St Peters Street just down the road from the church is where the food party happens. Located in an old milk float depot the space gets transformed for the weekend. This year do get tickets as it does get above capacity. Though when we visited on Sunday 15th no one was there to check our tickets, so this is on an ad hoc basis. Link below if you would like to book.
Having not been since pre covid times I was extremely excited and with friends down that excitement rose even more. The street food scene ever developing and looking forward to trying some of the new kids on the block. When we walked around at 12.30 it was already pretty busy having only been open for an hour. First thing first we got a seat and made sure we got one of the stronger benches. I held the seat while I let my boyfriend and our friends explore the food delights. In total there were between 10-12 vendors to choose from so lots of options.
My boyfriend opted first for the nomad chicken satay. This is not your normal chicken satay it was a sauce on top of the chicken and not on a stick. The sauce did make the chicken pretty dry, sprinkled on top was coriander and unfortunately it over powered the taste of the food. So my boyfriend has wished there was more peanuts less coriander on this dish. This was the only dish selected from the vendor so we would have to try a different dish in the future.
His second dish he opted for was from The Queen Pepiada , a vender selling arepas and other Venezuelan food. He opted for the one with avacado and pork (in the first picture ). He let me have a bite of the pork and it was delicious the little bite I had . He felt though the flavour combinations with the avocado did not go well together. The avocado being some what a bland kind of flavour . So in hindsight he's going to try other flavours in the future.
So what did I now eat I hear you ask, well once everyone had gotten their food I had to narrow my choice. I walked around for a bit and I was drawn to one place a lot by the dauphinois potatoes. Fire and flank mostly selling steak with some sides.
They had a few options with the flank steaks being with a side or in a roll starting at £7 up to £12. I opted for the most expensive dish on the menu , I thought go big or go home. The sous verde fank steaks they used I watched for ages and they cooked them to perfection. Medium rare on the inside and finished on the outside with a fire blow torch. The meat was delicious tender and melt in the mouth. All mains come with chimmi churri drizzled over it. I feel I would go for a roll next time as the sauce is very over powering and the meat on its own is deciduous.
So the main reason was the potato choice, they had chips, cheesy garlic mash and deep fried dauphinois potatoes. The deep fried dauphinois was my go to a square block of potato to gorge on. The outside was crunchy and the inside soft. The creaminess was lost unfortunately as the moisture was taken out. so I guess a little less time in the fryer and they would be perfect.
The final dish I had then was pudding it had to be done. With a range of options Pwdin was the sweet treat options. I opted for my favourite of sticky toffee pudding. When I approached the lady was the friendliest out of all the vendors. The pudding is warmed with whippy ice cream on the side. The pudding was well spiced , the sauce the correct amount of sweetness and the portions perfect. I would definitely recommend trying another pudding on the menu when I come across them again.
Overall the return of the street food circus was fantastic. Learning of the new vendors on the street food scene. I know I will have to return soon as there are so many options to try. Seeing as it's here for another 3 weekends I am sure I will be back soon with another food story to tell you.
