Located in the small village of St Hilarys down some winding roads is The Bush Inn. I had researched before hand hoping to find a nice country pub to eat lunch with my parents. Booking online before hand I had originally opted for a table inside with comfy chairs. When we arrived we were acknowledge by a member of staff in the car park which I thought was nice. We entered the rustic looking pub and were then given a choice of where we wanted to sit. As it was a lovely day we opted for outside under the shelter. In hindsight this was a bit of a rookie error as it did get very warm under the perspects covering.
We had our drinks order taken and promptly bought over. They had a good selection of drinks on offer and they came in such pretty glasses. They even passed the water test. A nice cold glass bottle of water to enjoy with our meal. This was actual brought over as often some restursnts forget.
It was then time to order our food, we were overwhelmed a bit with the options. With many pub classics as well as some specials it was hard to narrow down. They even had a range of pizzas that were comically named after the characters in cluedo.
So firstly we had a small starters to share some olives (£4) as well as foccica and balsamic vinegar(£4.50) the bread was lovely and warm and easy to tear but still with a crunch. The olives had a great variety and were not too salty. The dishes they came in were beautifully presented as well.
It was then time for our mains , so if you have met my dad you will know he loves fish. Preference of any meal will be the fish option. As soon as me and my mum saw sea bass we knew he would opt for that. Unfortunately when it came time to ordering they had none left. But they came up with a solution of an alternative. The fish and chips comes with haddock, as they cook them fresh he could have haddock without the batter. My dad was one happy man, fresh fish and chips with no batter, it did have his enemy though peas. He thoroughly enjoyed the fish even if he did give my mum the peas.
I then was set on having a pie, all pies came with triple cooked chips rather than mash which is my usual preference. I opted for the pie of the week of rabbit pie(£16.50) originally think the server had said rarebit, but either would of been fine. The pie did not disappoint though the top was a beautiful flakey puff pastry, the meat to gravy ratio was spot on. The chips were pretty decent as well , better than I have had at most places. The vegetable it came with were amazing, the biggest carrot I had ever seen. The tender stem brocilli also on the huge side and cooked excellently.
My mum had chosen to opt for one of the seasonal meals of a trip of lamb. This came with lamb cooked 3 ways , chips and some vegetables(£19.50). The first bit of the dish was a lamb chop, cooked and seasoned well. The second dish was a bon bon with a crispy shell on the outside and lovely soft lamb filling on the inside. The final dish which was her favourite was a mini cottage pie. The filling with onion, lamb and topped with sweet potato as well as normal potato.
We surprisingly still had room for puddings afterwards. My dad opted for the affogatto(£8), ice cream with a shot of expresso. The expresso came separately, but the jug it came in was so hot to handle he had to wait a bit before pouring it on the ice cream. Possibly a better container for this would be recommended.
My mum opted for the lemon roulade with pouring cream(£8). She enjoyed it but said she has had better. I had opted for the cheesecake of the week which was a raspberry and white chocolate(£8).The base was not your average base, it was more of a loosened crumb base. The fruit and chocolate blended well together and there was not a crumb left.
It has to be said I was truly impressed with the service given. Two young girls that served us through our visit no older than 18 or 19. Both had great knowledge of the menu, both did not miss anything off our orders. They even both came to check everything was ok with our food, on two separate visits to the table. The one even came back to make sure we did not miss our pudding as the kitchen was closing. They both did the pub proud and are an asset to your pub.
