Hidden away just past Merthyr Tydfil town is a quaint little tea rooms with plenty of character. My parents had been here before so they asked me to join them for lunch. We had booked in advance to avoid disappointment, but there was plenty of extra outside seating if needs be.
It was very busy when we arrived so me and my dad got the table while we waited for my mum to park. Once she got there we were given our menus and given about 10 minutes to browse them. We had unanimously opted for the afternoon tea. At £15 this was a steal of an offer for what you got.
So firstly you get to choose a sandwich of choice from the menu. With around 8 options there was something for everyone. Myself I opted for the brie and chutney. You get to choose either brown or white bread as well. As you can see pictured below the chunks of brie were amazing, there was no skimming on the ingredients here. My dad opted for smoked salmon and cream cheese while my mum opted for the ham and cheese. The ham is cooked fresh and cut into huge chunks.
With each afternoon tea you get a Welsh cake and a scone as well. The scone were plain for those who fear the currents. You get 2 separate bowls one with cream and one with jam. There was so much jam I had some to put on my welshcake. I know some people might favour butter, we did not ask but I am sure they would hand some over.
The scone it's self was lovely and fresh, it kept its form and it did not crumble to bits. The scone was a very butter rich scone and I'm pretty sure they bake them all in house. The jam that came with it was all the same flavour of raspberry, so I guess like it or lump it with that. The Welsh cake was a good size, but a bit dry. Luckily I had left over jam to go on it.
Each afternoon tea came with a luxury cake of choice. The day we went there were 4 options , all huge slices. I opted for the lemon cake, that was amazing. The frosting and the sponge were so fresh and zesty. My dad opted for a carrot cake which came topped with a carrot decoration. My mum then opted for the coffee and walnut cake. She had to take this home as she was so full from the rest of the food. When she did eventually have it there were plenty of walnuts.
The tea on the menu states a tea for one, as there 3 of us they gave us a big pot. The tea was tea leaves so comes with a little tea strainer. We were given an extra pot once we finished. This I am not sure if it was because the owner and my dad had a mutal friend and were talking. It was herself that offered us the tea top up.
The staff were very friendly overall and even passed the glass of water test. I will be sure to return again to try another flavour of cake and sandwich. If you would like to go, do go soon. The are not open on Fridays and have seasonal opening of April to October. The business is family run and does really have that feel.
