Volcano Japanese

I can't say it enough I love sushi, as well as other Japanese food delights. Having visited London sushi resturants previously , Cardiff until recently did not have an all you could eat. With many other Japanese restaurants it can soon add up for each bit of sushi, so this options is great. Located in Cardiff Bay in The Red Dragon Centre, Volcano Japanese restaurant has been around for just over a year.

Mostly offering the all you can eat option ranging from £25.99 to £28.99 and on lunchtime it being 50% off(excluding Bank holidays). You are given a menu with tick boxes to choose options. There are 5 rounds and you can pick 4 items for each round. This means if you can make it to the final round that is 20 dishes to try. This gives you the chance to try things you would normally opt for, but food waste is frowned upon, so only order what you know you will eat. If you make it to the final found and still have room there is options for Ice cream as well.

The setting for the resturant is stunning, the chairs also very comfy. There are many lanterns that decorate the ceiling and fake blossom trees to set the scene. They have music that is calming and makes the meal that much more enjoyable. While there I would reccomend visiting the toilets. The sinks are decorated with beautiful cherry blossoms as well.

First things first this was mine and my friends second visit so we were prepared. I would reccomend not eating a heavy meal before hand and leave room for sushi. Also on the menu aim for the sushi as well as the smaller nibbles , then save the heavy noodles and rice for last. Some dishes require extra costs, but as we learned from the sashmi previously its not worth it, stick to the main menu.

The drinks range is pretty good as well, with even an amazing mocktail menu. I opted for the mango and strawberry mocktail and it was lovely and fruity. My friend opted for just a diet Coke, but they are the bottles not pints so more than one maybe needed.

It was time to pick our first few dishes, each dish has a number, so we read these out rather than the dish name. We soon learnt that the best for your buck sushi dish was the uramaxi. You got 4 prices of this dish where a nigiri only gave you one. We opted for a few of these , such a the california roll, salmon roll and rainbow roll. They had some alternatives so we bit the bullet and tried them. First up was the Volcano roll, this was delicious and had a kick of spicy mayo on top. The other two rolls crispy chicken and tempura we gave a try. They both had a crispy crunch to them and were so fresh.

Along the bottom of the menu they had some chef special that I had to try. The first one was sesame balls, warm and crunchy sesame on the outside and softness inside. We also tried the chicken teriyaki roll and the roast duck roll, both mouthwatering. My favourite though was the golden gate roll. Avacado, wrapped in sushi rice covered on one side in breadcrumbs and fried. Thr textures went so well together and the sauce glaze was a great add on.

It was time to round up the sushi with some last bits. We got some avacado and salmon maki in as well as a salmon temaki. These both came with nori , but was not over powering like some can be.

I then wanted to opt for some of their warmer dishes they had on the flip side of the menu. Previously I tried the sweet potato croquette and it was amazing. It comes out pipping hot is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, paired by a nice dipping sauce . I had spotted they also had a pumpkin one, the waitress said it was really nice too. I ordered it and I was glad I did, it was just as good and in no way over powering in flavour. My friend opted for the mushrooms skewers, she loves them. They come drizzled in a teriyaki sauce which pairs well.

It then came to our final found. We opted for some warmer dishes. Last time we had tried the rice and it was amazing!! This time I went for chicken noodles, the noodles were really well seasoned. The chicken is cut up into chunks as well so easy to eat. We also noticed that the noodles are cut up so no messy eating to be seen.

Overall the staff were very efficient, but it was lunch time and not that busy. We made it to round 4 and then could not stomach any more. We did ask and people make it to round 5 , will you?

This is our second time visitng and we will be returning so we can try the whole menu. Make sure though on your way out to tap your number plate in the machines if parking as its then free.

Sounds delicious. Love sushi but not a fan of wasabi (it’s fair enough to say I detest it) so a little apprehensive about ordering.
